  • Laurie Cardwell



    Laurie is the founding Director of Mountain View Academy Charter School.  She graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in Elementary Education and has spent the last 30 years involved in educating kids.  She has taught in a variety of grades from kindergarten through high school and has been an administrator in both public and private settings.

    In 2011, Laurie co-founded a small private school.  This program, with its back to basics philosophy, quickly grew in size.  The model for this program was the basis for Mountain View Academy’s Charter and Laurie decided that this was a great way for the program to serve more kids.

    Laurie Has been married to her husband, Scott, for 38 years and they have 3 daughters, one son-in-law, and 2 grandsons.  She enjoys spending time with her family.

    Laurie and her husband Scott own and operate several small businesses as well, including a property management business and a small hobby farm.  Laurie enjoys raising goats and Livestock Guardian Dogs in her free time.  Each summer you can also find Laurie travelling around the globe, enjoying the rich traditions from other countries.

    Laurie is passionate about educating kids well and using their time efficiently.  She loves the idea of building character in her students so that one day they will be our world changers.

  • Jessica Cardwell



    Jessica grew up in the Eugene/Springfield area and is a graduate of Thurston high school. After high school, Jessica went to George Fox University where she graduated with a degree in Elementary Education and played soccer, softball and track. Jessica left her mark at GFU and you can still find her name atop the women’s soccer record books. 

    In 2008 Jessica began her teaching career and returned to Thurston High School to coach the women’s soccer program. She taught locally for a couple years before co-founding a private school in 2011. She would go on to teach 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade at Fall Creek Academy before joining Mountain View Academy. In 2012 Jessica’s Thurston soccer team won the 6A Oregon women’s soccer state championship. She continued coaching for one more year before leaving Thurston to pursue missions in Central America. 

    Jessica was the Director of women's soccer at Bushnell University for four years.  In 2018, she left Bushnell to become Mountain View Academy's full time director.

    During the summer months, Miss Jessica loves to travelto new locations around the world or lead mission teams with Forward Edge International.

  • Kelly Harris

    Executive Assistant


    Kelly is a small town girl and has a passion for working with people, especially children.  After graduating from high school, she married her high school sweet heart in 2000 and have two wonderful children, Kloee & Jace.

    Kelly has worked in an office setting for over 16 years.  She loves learning new things and the challenge to keep up with the advancement of technology. 

    When Kelly is not busy with her two children, she enjoys running, camping, hiking, and hanging out with friends.

  • Kayla Devereaux



    Kayla grew up in Springfield, Oregon and attended Thurston High School.  At Thurston, she played 3 years of varsity volleyball, earned Second Team All-League, and was recognized as a KMTR Prep Athlete of the Week in her senior season. Kayla also participated in Thurston's student mentor program where she tutored and mentored several ninth-grade students in multiple subjects.

     After graduating Thurston, Kayla went on to pursue an education and a collegiate volleyball career at Northwest Christian University.  At NCU she fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a collegiate athlete.  Her volleyball career came to a close with several accolades including: 3-time Red Lion Conference Player of the Week, a nomination for National Player of the Week, First Team All-Conference, NCU Scholar Athlete of the Year, and broke the record for most digs in a season which was previously set in 2012.  Kayla worked in Kindergarten through fourth grade during her practicum and student teaching experiences at NCU, it was during this time that she fell in love with teaching in the primary grades.  After a fulfilling academic and athletic career, Kayla graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. in Teacher Education and minor in Spanish.

     Kayla looks forward to shaping and teaching young minds.  She has a passion for the littles and can't wait to see what her young learners are capable of.

  • Shantele Lewellen

    First Grade


    Shantele Lewellen graduated from Thurston High School where she was one of the first women to join Transportation Technology. She learned to weld and built an electric car from the ground up. She also raced it against other districts in the state and placed 7th in the State of  Oregon. Thurston High is also where she met her high school sweetheart, Tim Lewellen, and they are now happily married. Tim and Shantele bought a home in Lowell and they cannot wait to get involved in the community, work hard, and eventually start a family.  

    Tim started his small business Great Wakes Marine while Shantele pursued education. She later graduated from the University of Oregon with her Bachelors of Science in Psychology and Business. 

    After some time in the business field, her love of education brought her to an Educational Assistant position at a Title I school in the Springfield School District. She loved educating children so much she decided to go back to school and earned her Masters of Arts in Teaching at Pacific University.

    Shantele is passionate about health and fitness. She enjoys cooking healthy meals, staying active, and loves the outdoors. In the winter you can find Tim and Shantele snowboarding, riding at the dunes, and hiking with their dog Harley. In the summer you will find them wakeboarding and wake-surfing on Dexter lake.

    Shantele is a true lifelong learner and is a strong advocate for establishing Growth Mindset in the classroom. She believes her number one trait is grit, which is one of the reasons she decided to become an educator. She wants to instill a growth mindset, desire to learn, and academic tenacity in every one of her students.  

    She is delighted to be at Mountain View Academy where she is teaching First grade. She is eager to meet her students and work - as a team - with their parents to give them the excellent education they deserve. 



  • Emily Roper

    Second Grade


    Emily grew up in Eugene and attended Sheldon High School, graduating from the International High School with honors. During high school, she played 4 years of Varsity golf and 4 years of basketball.  As a sophomore, she had the opportunity to travel to Germany with her basketball team and enjoyed learning about their culture.

    After high school graduation, Emily attended the University of Oregon, graduating in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education.  She was on the Dean’s list every term and completed the 4-year program in 2.5 years. 

    Emily married her husband, Bryce, in 2004 and they have  2 children, Gabby & Gage.  She spent the last 11 years at home, raising her children and staying involved in their education and activities.  She is very involved in her church where she volunteers in the nursery.  She enjoys traveling, being outdoors, hiking, making wooden signs, and building furniture. 

    Emily transitioned back into the work force in 2016 where she worked as a substitute teacher at Mountain View Academy.  She is very excited to be part of the MVA team where she will be teaching 2nd grade. 

  • Nikki Bevans

    Third Grade


    Nikki grew up in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. She graduated from Lake City High School in 2012. During her time at Lake City, she played four years on the varsity soccer team and earned All-Inland Empire League honors during all four years. She was also named Inland Empire League MVP as a senior. 

    She went on to spend a year in Eugene at Northwest Christian University pursuing her degree in exercise science and health.  During this year she also played on the women’s soccer team at Northwest Christian. Nikki transferred to University of Idaho to complete her undergraduate degree in exercise science and health. 

    In 2016, Nikki completed her Master’s of Arts Degree in Teaching at Northwest Christian University. Nikki spent her student teaching experience in kindergarten, 5th grade, and 8th grade math. She joined the women’s soccer team again leading the team to their first ever post season appearance and she earned All-Conference honorable mention. This year, she will join the coaching staff as one of the women’s soccer assistant coaches.  

    Nikki has been married to her husband Tyler for in 2016. They enjoy traveling and taking scuba diving trips. They are expecting their first baby in the winter of 2018. They have 2 dogs and enjoy spending time hiking and camping with their dogs.

  • Carmen Trimble

    Fourth Grade


    Carmen has been an Oregon resident for the past 21 years.  She and her husband Daryn moved here from Spokane, Washington in 1996, excited to start their family and careers.   Carmen has worked with children her entire adult life while her husband has put his Bachelors in Business Administration to work managing local electrical supply houses.  They moved out to Lowell in 1998 and continue to be a part of the local community.  

    Carmen graduated from Eastern Washington University in 1994 with a Bachelors in Psychology and began her career working with emotionally unstable children.  She spent the next 17 years working at Lane County’s Jasper Mountain Center, refining her behavior management skills and working with some of the most emotionally unstable and disturbed children in the state of Oregon and across the country.   After a long and rewarding career, Carmen decided she wanted to enter the world of general education and went back to school to obtain her Master’s in Education from the University of Phoenix.  She completed this part of her education in 2011.  After subbing in Lane County schools for two years, Carmen landed her dream job with the Fall Creek Academy teaching 4th/5th grade.  In 2013 Carmen moved from FCA to Mountain View Academy, teaching 4th grade and has been there ever since.  

    Carmen and her husband Daryn have been married for 22 years and have three children. They have raised all three children in Lowell, OR and have two graduates from Lowell High School.  Their youngest is a junior and is looking forward to becoming the third family member to graduate from Lowell HS. 

    During her free time Carmen likes to spend time with her family and her terrier mix dog.  She considers her greatest accomplishment to be raising three strong, independent, successful children and nurturing a loving, lasting marriage.   

  • Jessica Fisher

    Fifth Grade


    Jessica was born and raised in the Springfield/Eugene area and attended Thurston High School.  Before graduating high school, Jessica began working in the health care field as a Certified Nursing Assistant and Endoscopy Technician.  She continued to work at the local hospital for eight years while beginning her adventure and pursuing her long time dream of teaching.


    As a young child Jessica always wanted to be a teacher and after visiting a friend's classroom, she instantly began her journey at Northwest Christian University.


    In 2019 she graduated with her Bachelors in Elementary Education.  Jessica is very passionate about educating children of all ages as well as helping them find their love of learning.  She is beyond grateful and excited to be a part of the Mountain View Academy team.  


    When Jessica is not in her classroom she is busy spending time with friends and her very large family.  She has recently found her love of travel and just visited Ireland and Canada this past summer.

  • Taylor Smith

    Sixth Grade


    Taylor grew up in Reno, Nevada and graduated with honors from TMCC Magnet high school. Taylor, her husband Kevin, and their two dogs, Lola and Olive recently moved to Oregon from Nevada. Taylor graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno in the top 10% of her class with a Bachelor of Science degree in Integrated Elementary Education with an emphasis in English Language Learning. 

    This will be Taylor's fifth year as an educator. She has taught grades 6-12 in a variety of subjects. During her second year of teaching, Taylor was awarded Teacher of the Month in January of 2014. While teaching high school, Taylor coached the varsity volleyball team to their first division final. Upon moving to Oregon, Taylor accepted a position teaching the Eugene Emeralds during their season. She is currently teaching the team English to help them excel within their professional baseball careers. 

    During the summer, you can find Taylor kayaking, camping, hiking, playing volleyball, and playing disc golf with her husband and friends. She loves spending time with family in the outdoors! Taylor loves the color purple, macaroni and cheese, and baking. 

  • Rob Miles

    Seventh Grade & Special Education Coordinator


    Rob grew up in Myrtle Point, Oregon.  He comes from family of teachers.  His dad was a teacher and a principal and his mother was a reading teacher and substitute.  Both of his brothers are also teachers, at the high school and college level.

    Rob graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Science degree.  After graduation, he worked in business management for about 8 years before following his call to work with children.  He worked with abused children at Jasper Mountain Center for 15 years.  For 18 years, Rob and his wife Becky, provided treatment foster care for children leaving residential treatment.  During his time at Jasper Mountain Center, he went back to school at Pacific University where he received a Master of Arts in Teaching.  He then taught middle school at Jasper Mountain Center for 5 years.  During his time teaching at JMC, he went back to school again and received his Special Education License from Pacific University.  

    Rob  began teaching at Mountain View Academy in 2014.  He is currently the 7th grade teacher and Special Education Coordinator.

    Rob and Becky live on a large ranch in Fall Creek.  They have 2 sons, Logan and Landon.  Rob enjoys hunting, fishing, and shooting.  He loves watching his sons’ sporting events and rarely misses a game.  He is also a  huge Oregon State Beavers fan - Go Beavs!  His family’s favorite place to travel is to Disneyland ( they have visited over 10 times).  They are Disney experts if you ever have any questions!  

  • Rachel Walker

    Eighth Grade


    Rachel is very excited to be returning to Mountain View Academy!  This will be her second year as the eighth grade teacher.  In addition to teaching eighth grade homeroom this year, Rachel is also looking forward to teaching more middle school math classes!

    Originally from Seattle, Rachel has  lived in Boston, New York City, and Los Angeles before moving to Eugene, Oregon.  She received her undergraduate degree from Harvard University while swimming on the swim team there.  After college, Rachel embarked on a seven-year career in finance, working for JP Morgan.  However, her urge to become a teacher would not dissipate and she decided to switch tracks.  Rachel received her Master’s in Education from the University of Oregon in 2016.  She is currently licensed in Advanced Math and Biology as well as English to Speakers of Other Languages.

    In her free time, Rachel loves to enjoy the outdoors.  When not in the classroom, she can usually be found in the swimming pool or running with her dog, Andie!
